Corel today announced new digital photo workflow program, AfterShot Pro, taking advantage of technology from its acquisition of Bibble Labs. For those serious about digital photography, the workflow app is a sine qua non. The prime contender among these apps that let you smoothly import, organize, touch up, and share a large number of digital image files, usually from a DSLR, is Adobe's Lightroom, a PCMag.com Editors' Choice. In the digital imaging software business since 1985, it only makes sense that Ottawa-based Corel should try for a piece of this market.
'Today's photographers, whether they're professional or enthusiast, are coming from shoots with hundreds, if not thousands of photos,' said Chad Kinzelberg, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Digital Media at Corel. 'They want to be able to bring in their photos and get right to work finding their best shots and making them better. With AfterShot Pro we are delivering a powerful RAW workflow solution to help photographers power through their photo workflow and get back to doing what they love—taking great pictures.'
Corel competes with Adobe in several other software categories, usually at significantly lower price points, with products like PaintShop Pro (competing with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements), VideoStudio Pro (competing with Premiere Elements), and CorelDRAW (competing with Adobe Illustrator).
Corel Aftershot Pro 2 0 – Flexible Photo Workflow Solutions
The $99 AfterShot Pro (compared with Lightroom's $299 sticker price) is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It offers camera- and lens-specific corrections and includes the industry-leading image-noise-reduction software, Noise Ninja. The non-destructive editor emphasizes speed, and it can import popular digital cameras' raw file formats for more powerful editing possibilities.
AfterShot Pro doesn't use a modal interface like Lightroom's, which segments the workflow process into separate views for organizing, editing, printing, and so on. Instead, as with Apple's Aperture 3, all program features are available at all times. AfterShot Pro also features batch operations for generating output to JPEG, PDF, contact sheets, or standard print sizes. Like Photoshop, it lets users create separate 'layers' of adjustments, and allows the application of adjustments to apply to selected regions of an image.
A side effect of Corel's launch of its new workflow software is that Bibble Labs will be discontinuing its popluar Bibble 5 product, as announced in a forum post by Bibble's Jeff Stephens.
